When Your Employer Exhibits Blatant Age Discrimination
My husband is a certified safety manager. He has impeccable credentials and has a strong work ethic.
He is also 66 years old. He’s old enough to collect Social Security, but who can live on that? So he wants to work until he is at least 70 and then continue to work part-time.
Four years ago, his employer pulled up stakes and closed his plant down. It was unexpected because his company had promised not to do that. Well, you can’t believe everything that you hear, can you?
My husband went into work one day and then suddenly found himself in charge of escorting his friends and co-workers out of the building. His employer asked him to stay on for a few months to close the plant down. He accepted the offer because he has a family to support.
Then came the pain-staking problem of finding a new job. My husband knew that since he was 62, that the cards were stacked against him.
Eventually, he found a job with a company whose senior managers were the same age as my husband. There was a long commute involved, but they sweetened the pot by offering to pay for a hotel once a week.
