When I was a child, I didn’t talk to people. I didn’t want people to talk to me, and I didn’t want them to touch me. As you can imagine, I didn’t have many friends, and people didn’t respond positively to me. I have no idea why I was like that. I know that I wanted to have friends, and I wanted people to like me, but I was too scared to come out of my shell to do it.

One example of my shyness is when I went to visit my older sister’s church. She was singing a solo, and she wanted me to come. I had never attended church there, but the rest of my family had. I was a late child, and my parents had stopped attending church by the time I came along. The minister was walking down the center aisle and speaking to everyone. As he got closer and closer to my pew, I began to sink down in my seat. I didn’t want him to talk to me and I hoped that he wouldn’t see me. When he got to me, he asked me my name and boy was he surprised. He knew my family but didn’t know I existed. As he walked away, I heard him say to his wife,

Honey, there’s another one!

At the time, I was embarrassed. As I look back now, I think that it was funny. If it happened to me now, I would tell that minister all…
